YLC SEEKING SUMMER LAW CLERKS

The Youth Law Center is seeking law students to work full-time for ten weeks next summer in San Francisco.

The Youth Law Center is a non-profit public interest law program that works nationally to protect the rights, health and lives of disadvantaged children and families. The work of the Youth Law Center focuses on reform of the law in juvenile justice and child welfare. The Center's overall purposes are to protect children from abuse (focusing upon those in out-of-home placement), and to ensure that they receive the treatment and services to which they are legally entitled. To this end, staff attorneys work through technical assistance, public education, legislative advocacy and litigation when necessary. The Center has sued states, counties and a private provider in nineteen states on juveniles in adult jails, conditions of confinement, child welfare and health issues. Staff attorneys work with other legal service organizations, social service personnel, law enforcement personnel, judges, and private attorneys representing youth and children; assist states with legislative advocacy; prepare manuals and training materials for lawyers and youth advocates; and respond to requests for assistance from state and local officials, community groups, parents and attorneys.

The staff of the San Francisco office consists of six attorneys, a paralegal, an administrator and support staff.

Students will work closely with attorneys on pending federal and state civil rights litigation. Tasks include doing legal research and writing, drafting pleadings, attending litigation strategy meetings and any local court proceedings. In addition, students do legal research and prepare memoranda on public policy aspects of child welfare and juvenile justice. Students may also work on publications of the Youth Law Center.

Applicants must have completed the first year of law school and should have excellent research and writing skills. Experience in child advocacy work may be helpful. The Youth Law Center hires students who are recipients of public interest grants and volunteers. The Youth Law Center is an equal opportunity employer. Interested students should send or email a cover letter, resume, a list of three references, and a writing sample to Mamie Yee, YLC, 200 Pine St., Suite 300, San Francisco, CA 94104, myee@ylc.org.
